Aberchirder is a small village in rural Banffshire. It is laid out, like so many other villages in this part of Scotland, on a grid iron pattern with the main street passing through a central square. The shops and services are clustered around the centre, although some former shops have been converted back to residential use. Whilst not a big village, it is nevertheless the largest in the area, and so is home to shops, a Library, pubs and hotels.
The main road past the village is the A97, which has always followed its current route along South Street, despite this looking like a bypass. The B9023 arrives from the north and for many years met the A97 at both ends of Aberchirder, both junctions being simple T junctions. The western junction is the original and surviving meeting point of the two routes, with the spur along North Street added in c1945 and removed in 2017. A little further east, at the edge of the village, the B9025 heads east to Turriff.
