For the current junction 1, see Scotstoun Junction.
Admiralty Junction is Junction 1C of the M90. It was formerly numbered Junction 1, and for over 50 years marked the south end of the motorway, but was renumbered due to the motorway being extended south over the Queensferry Crossing. It connects with Admiralty Road, which runs through northern Rosyth and Inverkeithing, forming part of the A985 to the west and the A921 to the east.
It and Masterton Junction were the first two motorway interchanges in Scotland, opening in September 1964.
The junction is a fairly standard motorway roundabout interchange, albeit set at an angle to the motorway to minimise the disruption to nearby housing. The motorway, which is D2M at this point, passes overhead with slip roads dropping down to the roundabout and meeting it with two lanes. The A985 and A921 each only have a single marked approach lane, although in both instances they are wide enough for two cars to sit side by side. The two onslips run so tightly against the motorway mainline that a vertical retaining wall was constructed to carry the motorway. The Northbound sliproad required this due to the close proximity of housing, while the southbound onslip is squeezed between the motorway and a steep wooded hillside.
History
Before the motorway was built, the A985 continued further east along Admiralty Road to meet the A90 at the northern end of Inverkeithing. The [{A92]] (predecessor to the A921 also met the A90 a little to the south. With the construction of the motorway, the A92 was rerouted along a new road to the north of the old line, meeting the former A985 immediately to the west of the old A90 and so continuing to the motorway junction, the A985 being cut back accordingly.
