Dingle / Daingean Uí Chúis is – following an order made under the Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2011 – the only town in the Irish Gaeltacht to have official names in both English and Irish. The Irish-language name shown on road signs is normally in the abbreviated form An Daingean, and on signs erected between 2005 and 2011 this was the only name that appeared. Before the 2011 order, which was made following a local referendum on the question of the town's official name(s), some monolingual signs had "Dingle" unofficially added by those who feared that invisibility of the internationally known English-language name would adversely affect the town's tourist trade.
