Argyll is a traditional county in the west of Scotland, covering a large portion of the southern Highlands and Inner Hebrides. It was also called Argyle or Argyllshire in the past, both being further angliscised versions of the anglicised name. Most of the mainland area currently included in Argyll and Bute Council was formerly in Argyll, except the Helensburgh - Arrochar area which was part of Dunbartonshire. In the north, Argyll also included the north of Appin and Glencoe as well as The Ardgour, Ardnamurchan and Morvern areas, but not Moidart. Argyll's Islands have always included Gigha - Coll, although Muck, Rum and Canna were once part of the county as well.
Geography & Economy
The County of Argyll includes Mountains, fjord-like Sea Lochs, Islands and rugged coastlines. Indeed, the coastline is one of the longest of any county in the British Isles, thanks to the number of islands. The population is sparse outside the main towns, with vast tracts of uninhabited land on the mainland, and indeed on some of the islands. With the exception of Seil, which has a bridge, the inhabited islands are all connected to the mainland by Ferries, although some such as Jura have to use two ferries to reach the mainland.
The historic county town is Inveraray, seat of the Duke of Argyll. However, the modern administrative centre is at Lochgilphead, with outlying offices in the other main towns of Oban, Dunoon, Helensburgh and Campbeltown. Bowmore on Islay and Tobermory on Mull also offer town services, being each islands capital. The other islands, with the exception of Tiree, all have populations under 300. The most westerly point of the British Mainland is at Arnamurchan Point in the county of Argyll.
Argyll has a booming tourist economy, especially with the Islands and the mountains of Glen Coe and Glen Etive. Forestry and fishing also play a large part of the economy, along with Farming and Quarrying. There is also a Marine Science facility based near Oban, and a couple of military establishments in the county.
Roads
The Geography of the county naturally defines the road network, which is largely coastal but includes some spectacular routes through the mountains, including the A82 across Rannoch Moor and through Glen Coe. The northern half of the county is primarily served by the A and B road network, with few unclassified roads. However, the generally flatter terrain of the southern area, particularly Cowal and Kintyre allows a better network of unclassified roads, but they are still few and far between compared to other areas of the country. The islands, with the exception of Islay, tend to have few unclassified roads, although this is largely due to the low population as much as the Geography.
The trunk routes in the county are maintained by Transport Scotland and include the A82, A83 and A85. Most non-trunk roads are maintained by Argyll and Bute Council, although the Northern areas are under Highland Council.
