The original route of the B1306 ran along Market Street in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre.
It started on the A6086 Grainger Street and headed east along the entire length of Market Street to end on the A696 New Bridge Street. On the way it crossed the A184 Grey Street, the A1057 Pilgrim Street and the B1307 Trafalgar Street.
In 1929, the opening of the Tyne Bridge moved the A1 to run along Pilgrim Street (originally the A1057), putting the B1306 out-of-zone. It was renumbered B6440 and retained Class II status until recently; however, the road is now pedestrianised.
