For the original B1389 in North Walsham, Norfolk, see B1389 (Norfolk).
The B1389 follows the pre-bypass route of the A12 through the Essex town of Witham. This is one of the earlier bypasses on the A12 and so the B1389 dates to the late 1950s.
The road starts at J21 of the A12, a limited access interchange where the only missing movement is from the southbound A12 to the B1389. We head northeast along the old road; there's a brief rural section before the road becomes residential.
Continuing on, the road crosses the River Brain and enters the town centre. It runs along Newland Street, which is lined with shops. The B1018 crosses via a short multiplex between adjacent sets of traffic lights, after which the B1389 becomes residential once more. There's then a straight run to J22 of the A12, a full-access junction, where the B1389 ends.
