B164 (Northern Ireland)

Heading east

The B164 is a link road along the valley of the River Derg in County Tyrone. It was originally unclassified but gained its number in the late 1920s.

The road starts on the A5 to the west of Newtownstewart and heads west, then northwest, along Deerpark Road. We then descend into Ardstraw, where the road is traffic-calmed. The road then bears right and then narrows to cross the River Derg at a bridge that's not much wider than S1. On the far side the road widens and bears left to reenter open country.

We now run parallel to the river, albeit up the valley side, for the next couple of miles. Presently the river detours to the south so we climb over a hill spur so that we can remain straighter. The road then descends again and soon reaches journey's end at a T-junction on the B72; the junction is sharply angled making it far easier to turn left than right.
