Route outline (key)
B3399 Chale - Freshwater Bay
Chale Street

The B3399 is one of the longer roads on the Isle of Wight, following an inland route adjacent to the southwest coast. The road was originally part of the B3325 but was quickly upgraded to A3055. However, that road was diverted closer to the coast after World War II so the B3399 came into existence along the bypassed section.

The road starts on the A3055 by the church in Chale and heads north. Although the road soon comes within sight of open fields there are a number of houses along the road and so the road enters Chale Green without having become truly rural. Eventually, following sharp left- and right-hand bends, the road finally leaves the houses behind and enters open country. It runs over the top of a hill to Beckfield Cross, where it TOTSOs left.

Now narrower and more winding the road crosses the fields to enter Shorwell, where the centre white line occasionally returns. At a mini-roundabout in the village centre the B3323 turns right whilst we turn left and the quality of the road improves once more. There's the occasional sharp bend but we head more-or-less due west along the bottom of a ridge and presently enter Brighstone. A zigzag takes the road into the main street of the village, helpfully called Main Road, and we pass the church and thatched cottages that attract tourists here, although there are some more modern houses as well.

After leaving Brighstone we go through the tiny but spread-out village of Mottistone and then bear right to climb onto the ridge we've been following for some time now. We go through a gap before descending to Shalcombe, where we pass the pottery and then reach a T-junction. Right is the B3401 and we TOTSO left.

The road continues west, still following the ridge but now on the north side. It's a fairly straight road passing few buildings and seems to have a different character from the rest of the road. After a couple of miles we follow a leafy route past Afton to end back on the A3055 just to the south of Freshwater.
