The B4124 follows a generally south-to-north course west of Birmingham city centre. Today much of its former central section has been reclassified as part of the A4540; it always had a multiplex along the A41. The two remaining sections – from the A4040 in Harborne to Ladywood and from Soho Hill to the A34 just north of Hamstead – are, respectively, 2 miles (3.2 km) and 3.3 miles (5.3 km) long.
