The B4401 runs along the Dee Valley in Merionethshire.
The road starts on the A494 at Tre'r-Llan, to the east of Llanfor - and only a couple of miles away from Bala - and heads east, running downstream along the valley of the River Dee. The road is therefore winding at times as it tries to fit into a small gap between the river and valley edge.
To start with the B4401 heads slightly southwards to avoid climbing into the hills. It then heads northeast to Llandderfel where the B4402 comes in from the left and meets the B4401 by the war memorial. The B4401 is then the dominant partner in a short multiplex across the river. After the other road heads off to the right the B4401 continues downstream.
After passing a few scattered houses the B4401 finally reaches Llandrillo. It bends sharply left in the village centre and crosses the River Pennan. The road then heads northeast once more, still along the Dee Valley, to pass through Cynwyd before reaching Corwen about a mile further on. The road ends here at a T-junction on the A5.
