For the original B5172, now part of the A5058, see B5172 (Liverpool).
The B5172 is a short urban link road in Birkenhead. It was originally unclassified; owing to its short length its history is not fully known but it definitely existed by 1936/37 as it appeared on the MOT map of that year, but did not appear on the 1929/32 MOT map.
The road starts at a roundabout on the B5148 from where it runs eastward along Bedford Avenue and Bedford Road. It crosses over the Liverpool to Chester and Ellesmere Port branch of the Wirral Line immediately south of Rock Ferry railway station.
The route now ends at traffic lights on the B5136 (pre-bypass A41) in the Rock Ferry area of Birkenhead but, as can be seen from the accompanying map, once continued to the ferry itself, at Rock Ferry Pier. Although the ferry stopped running following the outbreak of World War II the pier is still in existence.
