This article is about the original B5196 in Lancashire.
For the later B5196 in Cheshire, see B5196 (Cheshire).
For the later B5196 in Cheshire, see B5196 (Cheshire).
The B5196 number was initially allocated to the direct road running from Maghull to Scarisbrick in south Lancashire, crossing the B5195 halfway at Downholland Cross. The road was upgraded to the A598 by the end of the 1920s, allowing the B5196 number to be reused elsewhere.
In 1935, the road was renumbered as an extension of the then-A567. It kept this number until at least the 1970s but today the road is the A5147.
