The road starts at traffic lights by Trafford Bar Metrolink station on the A5014 Talbot Road and heads south along Seymour Grove to pass Seymour Park and meet the B5224 at traffic lights.

Although the first section is more-or-less straight, the road starts to bend to the right at traffic lights where it meets the B5218. It then crosses the South Manchester branch of the Metrolink before reaching Chorlton cum Hardy. It crosses the A6010 at traffic lights before ending shortly afterwards at another set of traffic lights on the A5145, where that road has to TOTSO.

Before the 1960s the B5217 continued ahead along what is now the A5145. It went through Barlow Moor and West Didsbury to end on the then-A34 (now B5093) in Didsbury Village.
