Route
The B6178 is an urban B-road to the southeast of Manchester city centre.
The road starts at traffic lights on the A6 in the suburb of Levenshulme. Owing to the angle of the junction B6178 traffic may only turn left onto the A6 but all other movements are permitted.
The road heads north along the residential Broom Lane. At the far end the road reaches traffic lights and TOTSOs right, soon bearing left onto Mount Road. The B6178 ends at the far end of Mount Road, at traffic lights on the A57. Eastbound A57 traffic may not turn right onto the B6178: instead it turns left onto Glencastle Road to cross the A57 at these traffic lights.
History
All the above was unclassified in 1922. The original road started on the A62 in Miles Platting and ran south via the A662 and A635 to reach the A57 in Belle Vue. The road was quickly extended south (via a brief multiplex) to reach the A6 in Levenshulme.
The original section of the road was renumbered A6010 in the 1960s. That road has been considerably improved in the intervening years and now sizeable sections of the ex-B6178 are unclassified as the A6010 takes a slightly different route.
