The B81 follows the very short Hastings Road in St Helier. It starts on the B80, Roseville Street, which is one way towards the junction from each end, meaning all traffic from the B80 must turn into the B81 at the junction. It also means that the B81 is initially one-way eastbound. This junction is a filter in turn type, where the pavement opposite the B81 is bulged to turn traffic into the side road, but there is no indication of priority. Heading east, at the junction with Cleveland Road, the B81 becomes two-way for the last short bit to the A15, St Clements Road. Here all traffic has to turn north, as the A15 is also a one-way road.
Due to the nature of the one-way traffic, and the fact it is completely unsigned, the B81 is often shown as a spur of the B80.
