The Milton of Leys Junction lies on the southern edge of Inverness, and provides access to the large new housing developments that are being built on the hillside above the Highland Capital. It is also known by the older name of Drumossie Junction, although this seems to be falling out of use. The junction is a Dumbbell design, with roundabouts either side of the A9, and then curving slips to the south of each connecting to either carriageway of the A9 dual carriageway. The slips and roundabouts mark the southern end of the B9177, which is the old line of the A9 as it climbed out of Inverness. Indeed, the southbound onslip is almost exactly on the line of the old road.
When first built, this junction was much quieter than it is today, and was a simple at grade T junction with a central reservation gap connecting the unclassified old A9 to the new road. However, the road was then reclassified as the B9177 and then with the development of the new housing estates on the opposite side of the dual carriageway, the current junction was built to provide safe access for the traffic. As Milton of Leys grows, it is likely that traffic volumes here will increase steadily, proving the value of upgrading the junction.
