Cadgers Brae Roundabout is part of junction 5 of the M9 and lies to the east of Falkirk and south of Grangemouth. It has previously been referred to as both Inchyra Roundabout and Beancross Junction in official documents. Today it is also the start point of the A9, which was re-routed to this junction, although the route was truncated around the time that Edinburgh Airport was extended. The original route of the A9 is further south, and now part of an extended A803. When the M9 first opened, the A9 took over part of the old A905 route along Grandsable Road, and then turned to meet the motorway. This was changed again in the mid 1990s when the A9 was re-routed around the relief road to the north of Falkirk.
The roundabout lies underneath the motorway, and has three other exits - the A9 heads west, whilst the A905 runs parallel to the M9 to the north west and then turns to the north east. Due to the closeness of the A905 to the motorway, the Southeastbound off-slip is about half a mile further up the A905 to the north west, with the sliproad meeting the A road at traffic lights. The two meet at the point where the A905 leaves its original line, which continued south to meet the A9. The road alongside the motorway is new build, as is the eastern arm to the A904, although this partly replaces the now unclassified B904.
As originally built, Junction 5 was paired with M9 J6 to the north, and so there were no north facing slips provided. This is shown on both the 1971 and 1974 OS One Inch maps. The additional slip roads appear to have been added in c1986/7, after the A905 route to the east was built in order to improve access to the refinery site.
