History

Crossing

There is a daily service from Oban through the summer months, calling at Coll and Tiree. Sometimes the ferry calls at Coll before and after Tiree, and on Wednesdays there is a slightly different schedule, with the ferry crossing to Barra in the middle, allowing daytrippers to visit either island (this previously happened on Thursdays). The direct crossing to Coll is just under three hours, while to Tiree it is just over three hours, or 4 hours via Coll.

The Summer service ferry is MV Clansman, which carries 90 cars. In the winter, the schedule is reduced to just four days a week, missing out Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This fits in with the Barra and Lochboisdale service, using MV Lord of the Isles alone.

2012 Draft Ferries Plan

In late 2011 the Scottish Government released the draft ferries plan for the coming 10 years. Although the Coll and Tiree service is already pretty comprehensive during the summer months, it is restricted during the winter. The long term plan is to improve this to a 6-day winter service, probably in conjunction with the additional ferries needed to fulfill other service improvements out of Oban.

The previously mentioned idea of repeating the summer Thursday schedule on another day of the week during the summer months is not discussed in the draft. Whilst this would bring additional tourist revenue to the islands from daytrippers, it may not be a viable service amongst the other proposals.
