Crossbush Roundabout is an unfinished dumbbell interchange which should have formed the start of the A27 Arundel Bypass. It was built as part of a short bypass of Crossbush, hoping to feed onto the bigger Arundel Bypass. A temporary road was built between the two sliproads on an embankment to help relieve the western bridge, which now forms the mainline of the A27.
Consequently, this junction is a traffic blackspot. Things used to be worse for westbound traffic as to stop traffic taking the wrong post there were large boards at the start of the unused underpass which the road used to have to reduce to one lane to negotiate, only to open up to two again on the sliproad.
Future
Since the introduction of the Road Improvement Strategies starting in early 2010s, the aspiration to get a Arundel bypass built has been actively been consulted on. The new plans for the Arundel Bypass show that Crossbush Interchange will be the eastern point of the improvements. No major changes where proposed to Crossbush Junction from its original proposed design of a single bridge linking two dumbbell roundabouts up until the consultation in November 2022 where the junction layout has been revised to now have a a second bridge over the A27 to carry A284 Northbound Traffic, whilst the existing bridge will only carry A284 Southbound traffic. This was the result of additional traffic modelling showing that congestion would happen at opening traffic levels. The addition of a new bridge would also allow for better NMU provision, allowing a suitable width shared use pavement instead of retrofitting the existing 2m footway as a cycle/footway. Also in the November 2022 revised plans, a segregated free flow left turn lane is proposed for A284 traffic heading south onto the A27 Eastbound. Also right turns would be banned out of the services, requiring traffic wanting to head south on the A284 to first go North to the first roundabout where traffic could carry out a u-turn to head south.
