Dinnet Bridge

Dinnet Bridge crosses the River Dee on the B9158 near Dinnet. It is a single span concrete bridge built in 1935 to replace an older crossing which was no longer fit for vehicular traffic. The bridge is a very unusual design, with two triangular cantilevers projecting from either bank supporting a central span formed with steel girders. This allows the bridge to span the wide river channel in one span without the need for any piers in the river. The abutments are formed with substantial piers, to balance the cantilevers, which are detailed with horizontal grooves to look like stonework. The parapets too are detailed to look like courses of stone over the cantilevers, although the central span is marked vertically instead, with stepped joints below a continuous run of coping stones. The bridge has not aged well, however, and many of the finer details are now discoloured and dirty or hidden by moss, making the structure look somewhat rough and ready.

The level roadway across the bridge is a normal two-lane road with a pavement on the downstream side only. Wing walls extend back along the road beyond the bridge, presumably as far as the cantilever requires to balance the structure. These wing walls match the cantilever parapets with horizontal detailing.

Due to the closure of Aboyne Bridge downstream, traffic is being diverted across Dinnet Bridge. As a result, it was announced in April 2024 that the council were intending to reduce the bridge to a single lane with priority signage to extend the working life of the structure.
