Ditton Roundabout

The roundabout before the Mersey Gateway tie-in modifications

Ditton Junction, formerly Ditton Roundabout, was a large, grade-separated roundabout interchange. It was extensively modified during the mid-2010s for the tie in of the construction of the Mersey Gateway Bridge, such that it no longer even consists of a roundabout.

The junction connected the A562 Speke Road, the A562 Ashley Way West (now multiplexes the A557), the tertiary Ditton Road, and the A533 Queensway. The A533 then lead to a multiplex with the A557, where the original Queensway served as a bypass of this junction and a continuation of the Widnes Eastern Bypass. Additionally, there was a flyover from Speke Road to Queensway to the South to link traffic from Liverpool to Runcorn and the M56.

A smaller roundabout immediately North connected the B5419 Moor Lane South (towards Kingsway) and the tertiary Lowerhouse Lane with the A562 Ashley Way West.

Since then, the Widnes Eastern Bypass was cut short to terminate at Widnes Loops Junction with a short spur of the A557, which was moved to multiplex the A562 up to the current Ditton Junction along Ashley Way. The A533 was removed from the Silver Jubilee Bridge along Queensway to the South of this junction, and now crosses the Mersey Gateway Bridge. The aforementioned flyover of the roundabout was replaced so that the Liverpool traffic was directed East onto the new bridge and then Runcorn's Central Expressway (functionally replacing the Silver Jubilee South Junction with the Bridgewater Interchange).
