Essex is a traditional county in southeast England north of the River Thames.
Most non-trunk roads within the traditional county are maintained by Essex County Council, Thurrock Unitary Authority and Southend Unitary Authority, whilst those areas covered by the Greater London Authority are maintained by the relevant London Boroughs and Transport for London.
