Lighting replacement A456 Birmingham - Coppermine - 17225.jpg
Lighting replacement A456 Birmingham

Some of the old S&L columns are being replaced on Hagley Road West. Birmingham is one of a few authorities not to mix different lighting types so the new columns are having SOX lanterns fitted.

Quinton, Birmingham. It was unusual to see these columns with casual Unistreet (LED) replacements. The old blue columns on the left are Sandwell council, and the modern black columns on the right are Birmingham council.

IMG 8627.JPG Hagley Rd street lights.jpg
Mixture of different street lights along Hagley Rd, at the junction meeting with the Birmingham New Rd. On the left are a few 10m blue columns with WRTL Arc 90s (SON/HPS) and taller 12m black posts with Indal Airtrace (SON/HPS) lanterns, which belong to Birmingham council. As for on the right, those street lights belong to Sandwell council, where there are more 10m blues columns with an Arc 90 and also Philips Digistreets (LED), along with S&L columns with geared Philips MA60s (SOX/LPS) in the background as well. This road is right on the border between Birmingham and Sandwell, which is why the street lighting on each side is different.

Jet-black 10m columns along Hagley Rd, at the underpass in Quinton. The lanterns on the left are Indal Airtraces (SON), and on the right are Philips Digistreets (LED). This is right on the border between Birmingham (left) and Sandwell (right), which is why the street lighting is different on each side.
IMG 0686.JPG philips digistreets halesowen.jpg
Older columns with new Philips Digistreets (LED). The previous lanterns were Philips SGS306s (HPS/SON) and they were on longer brackets as well. This is along the A456 coming into Halesowen.
IMG 0688.JPG philips digistreets halesowen.jpg
1990s columns with new Philips Digistreets (LED). The previous lanterns were Urbis ZX3s (HPS/SON). The longer outreach brackets have since been cut back and shortened as well. This is along the A456 on the edge of Halesowen.
IMG 0687.JPG urbis zx3s halesowen.jpg
Urbis ZX3s (HPS/SON) on a twin bracket and a 12m steel column. These are some of the only few ZX3s on this stretch of road that still remain, which have been there since the early 1990s. Nearly all the rest of have been replaced for Philips Digistreets (LED), and the outreach brackets have been cut off and shortened as well. This is along the A456 in Halesowen.

Along the A456 on the outskirts of Halesowen, with a 50 mph speed limit. The street lights along here used to have longer brackets with deep-bowled Urbis ZX3 (SON/HPS), but earlier this year the outreach arms were removed and lanterns got changed for Philips Digistreets (LED).
IMG 0685.JPG iridium a456 hagley.jpg
10m steel column with a Philips Iridium. The street lights in the background are older 1970s style of columns with Philips SGS203s, which wouldn't have been the original lanterns. This is on the A456 in Hagley.
IMG 0679.JPG holophane estilo kidderminster.jpg
Older 1970s style of steel column and bracket with a more modern Holophane Estilo lantern, which I think runs on a cosmo lamp. This on the A456 in Kidderminster. I was told that the previous lantern may have been a Thorn Alpha 4, which would of ran on a LPS/SOX lamp.

12m steel columns with Phosco P850s. I believe these LED street lights are about 5 years old now.
IMG 0683.JPG long arms with Philips SGS203s.jpg
1970s street lights with long diagonal and outreach brackets with Philips SGS203s (SON/HPS). I was once told that the original lanterns were Thorn Alpha 5s (SOX/LPS). This is along the A456 in Hagley, Worcestershire.

IMG 7421.JPG black columns twin brackets indal airtraces.jpg
Black columns with unusual twin brackets supporting Indal Airtraces. Thankfully some of these street lights still survived after the tramway/metro extension work took place here. This is on Hagley Road at the Edgbaston Village just outside Birmingham city centre.
