The middle of M50 J6 - Coppermine - 14491.jpg
The middle of M50 J6

The Blanchardstown exit of the M50 (J6) is quite an interesting one. A roundabout carrying the N3, the main Dublin - Sligo railway, and the Royal Canal all pass over the M50 mainline. The towpath beside the canal should provide a good vantage point for observing the upgrade works once they start here. This shot was taken from the canal, facing south: the railway line is in the foreground, with the southern arm of the N3 roundabout in the background. It's a very large diameter roundabout (160m).

Old end of ROI M1.JPG
This is at the northern end of Dundalk, where the motorway current ends. Note the patching on the M1 part still shows! I assume that the northern section continues as a motorway at least for some stage - so this roundabout will have M1 to belfast and M1 to dublin!. I wonder if it would be appropriate for those designing the sign to have M1 (A1) Belfast. Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 12, 2007 by michaelsa
M50 interchange - Coppermine - 11368.jpg
My version of the proposed M1/M50 interchange

I'm not very keen the actual proposed plans for the M1/M50 interchange which involves building just a couple of bridges over the existing roundabout interchange that to continue on the M50 either way you'll need to turn off to stay on.

I think the M50 should continue by bypassing this interchange heading south to the Port Tunnel and the M1 to start/end on the M50 that the M50 is supposed to be the Dublin 'Orbital' Motorway but look at Manchester's M60 at one point you still have to turn off to stay on...

Looking east from Oldbridge Road. The River Boyne flows towards Drogheda - the church can just be seen in the distance framed by the bridge. The pic doesn't really do the scale of the bridge justice.

Again, this section will be renamed the M50. Sign on the right informs us that trucks of greater than 3.5 tonnes MGW and buses with more than 25 seats will not be liable for the toll.

M1 motorway southbound

This original 1980's sign hasn't long for this world. The border around the 'M1' is unique on irish motorways AFAIK. This is the start of the Dublin Port Tunnel works. Don't know who put a lamp post in front of the sign!

The M1, but not for much longer!

Onslip to the M1 at Coolock Interchange. This is the last interchange before the M50 looking at the northbound onslip. All the blue signage is original and is pretty decrepit looking at this stage. The orange diamond is a diversion sign for the Dublin Port Tunnel works. The 'motorway ahead' sign has been patched with a metric minimum speed. The vehicular traffic only sign is cos rules are there to be broken and you often see cyclists and people waiting for lifts under bridges on irish motorways!

M1 southbound approaching M50 Exit Gantry

Not a bad gantry sign but the (N32) shouldn't be patched (same rules as the UK) and 'other routes' is a bit vague for my liking, They should have just printed 'N32-N2-N3-N4-N7-N81-N11' on the sign and dispensed with 'Malahide' altogether.

Northbound M1 from R104 interchange

The M1 facing northbound from the R104 interchange, just after the start of the Dublin Port Tunnel. This section, in the future, is more likely to be renamed as the M50 as part of its eastern extension through the tunnel.

Start of the M1 in Northern Dublin - Coppermine - 4754.jpg
Start of the M1 in Northern Dublin

The start of the M1 in Santry, Dublin 9 facing northbound to Belfast. Even though it doesn't look like how a motorway should look like. It is more like a continuation of the N1 which is single carriageway. The newly dug up earth and the remaining streetlights on both far left and right of the pic shows the M1, at this point, was a standard motorway then being narrowed down to S2 because of the Dublin Port Tunnel. This probably will be downgraded to a primary route when the tunnel opens.
