Gallery:N3
This picture was taken as I crossed the border on 6th September 2004. The Foreground road markings are N3, ROI and the A46 starts at the UK 40mph sign. I think the garage was selling petrol at ROI prices (30% cheaper than UK) but in UK sterling as it straddles the border. The N3 resumes if you follow the A46 to Enniskillen and and take the A509 towards Cavan. N3 starts again about 12 miles north of the town.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 18, 2009 by csdIn the days before the M50, the N3 ran like this. The path can now be followed only by peds as a footbridge completes the old route over the motorway. I can vaguely remember when the M50 Western Parkway was opened and it ended here (the Northen Cross had not yet opened) at a T junction with traffic lights!

I think it is actually a bike lane. The soid white changes to yellow in a bit
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 07, 2007 by LocatedIn the background you can see the N3 still in use facing towards Dublin. In the middle the old alignment of the N3/R157 to Dunboyne junction and in the foreground the new M3- southbound to the right.

This picture is unashamedly taken through the windscreen!Photo taken approaching the ROI/NI boder on 6th September 2004. The N3 is about to become the A46 about 3 miles east of Ballyshannon. Note the Irish 'pre worboys' sign on the left.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 16, 2008 by murphaphWhy do they continually refer to Cavan as the northernmost terminus of the N3 when it should be Ballyshannon?! I'm not 100% sure the panel should be all green. The NRA has some new rules about short link roads to National Routes and keeping them all green for simplicity. The N3 is just 150m to the left but that is technically not the N3 and the road doesn't lead inescapibly to the N3 either. Still-much better than what was there before-nothing.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 16, 2008 by murphaphA signalised roundabout on the N3, at Castleknock, near the interchange with the M50. Only one arm of the roundabout has no traffic lights on it which instead has Yield signs. As you can see the roundabout signage is interestingly different! This entire intersection has been replaced by a massive signalised junction - C2r, Feb 2016
Glaring error on this one. Mulhuddart is not on a national route, or even a regional route anymore. It should be white of course. The straight ahead destination is questionable under new NRA rules it may be permitted to be all green with no parantheses around N3 as it is not the N3 but only 150m to it. Probably makes more sense to be the way it is alright.
