West Saltoun is a picture-postcard hamlet about 25km south-east of Edinburgh, and is one of many such places in East Lothian. Only about 60 metres separate its speed limit delimiters - could this possibly be one of the shortest stretches of restricted road in Scotland?

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 10, 2005 by jhluxtonAbandoned carraigeway just beyond the gate which closes of the remaining open part of the road. The unmade pavement can be seen on the left. This path has completely disappeared at the Horse Leap collapse

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 10, 2005 by jhluxtonThe former Tramway / footbath viaduct crossed the Wallberry ravine at this point. The foundation to the central pier can be seen in the middle of the photo. Partly engulfed by infill tipped when the road was cut into the cliff in the 1950s.
In the distance the Douglas side abutment of the viaduct can be seen
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 10, 2005 by jhluxtonStanding on the carraigeway at Wallberry - the road markings are still just about visible though this section of the A37 has been out of use for around 30 years.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 10, 2005 by jhluxtonClose up of the road collapse at Horse Leap showing how the footpath and road edge has completely gone. At this point the road is also under threat from slates which fall from the cliff onto the carraigeway.
Recently it was suggested that the A37 could reopen as a relief road into Douglas which suffers severe traffic congestion at peak hours. The cost of repairs at Horse Leap was put at 2 million. It was not proceded with.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 29, 2006 by Bryn666Looking towards Limbrick - this was a wasteland of guard rails when it was a roundabout. This is a vast improvement.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 29, 2006 by Bryn666A view over the former roundabout-ish arrangement, and I have to say it's much improved.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 29, 2006 by Bryn666I followed to One Way signs thinking they were the exit from the local Health Centre (which has just rebuilt its entire car park, and I end up finding a dead end... let's see what happens when we turn around...
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 03, 2006 by Bryn666After a deviation along a rerouted A30, we return to the original bypass, although now u/c The wide bit on the right appeared in the 60's, implying a D2 was on its way. It never progressed beyond this though.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 21, 2009 by SteveA30Still on the now unclassified section, this was once choked with summer queues.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 18, 2008 by SteveA30This is the Tadcaster road at Copmanthorpe (south of York). as the moon rises over the ECML the colours are almost magical.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Nov 16, 2006 by True YorkieThe main street through Copmanthorpe is Manor Heath. The reason why I took this photo is because the sign is actually a considerable distance away from the roadside, presumably because the road was diverted when the A1237 junction was built. Originally it would have crossed the A64 and then headed off past Askham Bryan College and onto Askham Richard.

Note: turn right is in the centre of the pedestrian controlled lights zone. The original listed houses on the Left were demolished by mistake when the relief road was constructed... they had to be rebuilt but lack the bow fronted shop windows amongst other features.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 20, 2007 by TruveloThis is the same view after Sandwell Council carried out another road safety scheme. The zebra crossing is now a puffin and the road has been narrowed so passing a cyclist at the crossing is now more risky than before. Oh yeah, a couple of Gatsos have gone up as well.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 20, 2007 by TruveloThe same location in 2007. These traffic lights have made the local press on several occasions due to the delays they cause by being stuck at a red light when there's no traffic around. The road to the right was added to serve the new Co-op but it also allows motorists to avoid the second set of lights and speeds of up to 60mph have been reported as people try to beat the lights. Another feature not found in the earlier picture is the addition of speed humps in the foreground.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 20, 2007 by TruveloThis 'after' view shows how much the road has been narrowed by restriping it with a formal parking bay and adding a buildout at the crossing.
