Hammersmith is an area of London, and a historically significant place in the local road network.
The A4 and A219 have always crossed here, although at different locations over the years. The first signifiant project was the extension A4 Cromwell Road Extension, which opened around 1958 as a bypass of Kensington High Street. This diverted the A4 away from the historic coaching route, but meeting up with it again briefly at the Hammersmith Gyratory before diverting again, to connect with the Great West Road.
The next major construction in the area was the Hammersmith Flyover, which opened in 1961. This allowed traffic on the A4 to avoid the gyratory completely and provide the best access route westward from Central London. It was temporarily closed after safety concerns in 2011, but re-opened the following year.
The other major road feature in the area is the Hammersmith Bridge, carrying the A306. Because of safety concerns, it closed to motor traffic in 2019, and completely in 2020.
