The roundabout where the A34 crosses the A500 to the south of Newcastle-under-Lyme is officially called Hanford Interchange, although, being on the right bank of the Trent, it is not actually in Hanford.
The history of this junction is involved. Originally, there was a T-junction here, where the B5041 (Campbell Road) met the A34. Then, following the construction of the M6 in 1962, a roundabout was constructed here where the new A5006 link road joined the A34. Not until later was the road to the east also called A5006.
In the 1970s, a fifth road, the A500, was plugged in to this roundabout and soon afterwards the A5006 to the east was blocked off to facilitate traffic flow. The building of the flyover - and renumbering of the through route as A500 - left the junction in more-or-less its current state by the end of the 1980s.
Given that the original number of the A34 here is A449, this junction has altered beyond recognition since the beginning.
