Hangleton Interchange, connecting only the A27 and the A293 (which provides access to the town of Portslade), is the smallest junction on the Brighton and Hove bypass. The bypass was constructed in the early 1990s; however, Southwick Hill Tunnel, which is directly west of Hangleton Interchange, was not opened until 1996.
This lead to for a short period of time the A27 turned off and went along its only route before reconnecting at the Shoreham Bypass the other side of the Hill. [?]
When Southwick Tunnel is closed for maintenance and emergencies, traffic leaves and joins the bypass at Hangleton.
