Hertford is the County town is in the east of Hertfordshire on the River Lea where it is joined by 4 other rivers (the Beane, Mimram, Ashbourne, and Rib). It is the county town of Hertfordshire and main administrative base for Hertfordshire County Council. It exists in the second tier authority of East Hertfordshire and has a third tier town council level.
The town is bypassed to the east by the A10, where the impressive Kingsmead Viaduct spans the Lea valley between Hertford and Ware. The New River starts in the meads below the viaduct. The dual carriageway A414 bisects the centre of the town.
