Honiton is a small town in Devon, and a primary destination. Traffic from Exeter splits here towards London on the A30 or the Dorset coast via the A35.

History

The bypass

The A30 bypassed the town in 1966 and proposals were made to dual the A30 either side of this bypass soon after. The section towards Exeter opened in 1999 but that towards Marsh and Ilminster was abandoned. This would also have incorporated an eastern bypass which would have removed A35 traffic from the town.

Experimental signs

Honiton was the first place to have signs erected showing the local services. They were on the trunk road approaches and included a map of the town and local services, so presumably they were layby signs. It was part of an experiment which started in July 1971. The other towns were Stamford and Kendal.
