The M96 is a simulated motorway, located at the Fire Service College in Gloucestershire. It has no connection to the public road network, and there is no public access. The motorway is used to simulate road accidents for training, and has two carriageways, one three lanes wide and one six. It is extremely realistic, having SOS phones, distance marker posts, speed cameras and catseyes, as well as being fully signposted within the college.
It is numbered completely out of zone, as it lies north of the M4 and east of the M5, it should have a number in the M4X series. However, as there is no public access, this is not a concern, and likely was chosen as Zone 9 has the least motorways, and being numbered so randomly means Zone 4 traffic does not mistake it for a public motorway.
In addition to its training use, it also appears regularly in film such as advertisements where it can be spotted by the asymmetrical number of lanes.
On the 23rd of July 2010, SABRE had a trip to see the motorway.
