The Markeaton Island is a busy roundabout between the A38 and A52, just West of Derby city centre.
It was first built as a much smaller roundabout between the old road called Queensway, and a single carriageway road called Kingsway. These were both part of the A511, and are now the A38.
In the late 1960s the roundabout was enlarged. The ring road was later turned into a dual carriageway.

Derby Junctions
The Markeaton Island is one of the junctions which is due to become grade separated as part of the A38 Derby Junctions scheme. This scheme is due to begin in 2020. Smaller scale work to install permanent traffic signals and widen parts of the roundabout took place during 2014.
A public consultation ran in February and March 2015 regarding the Derby Junctions scheme. The preferred option at the Markeaton Roundabout is a new grade-separated roundabout, where the A38 is lowered into a cutting below the existing roundabout.
