Crossings related to the B979 | |||
Maryculter Bridge carries the B979 over the River Dee between the tiny village of Maryculter and Peterculter on the western fringe of Aberdeen. It's location on the edge of the urban area means that it has long been an important and busy crossing, but in late 2018 that is likely to come to an end when the new Bridge of Dee on the AWPR finally opens to traffic, relegating Maryculter bridge to being no more than a local link. This new bridge has been built immediately downstream of the old crossing, and dominates the Dee valley at this point.
The bridge itself dates back to 1895 when the first crossing of the Dee at this location was opened. It comprised 5 spans in total, 3 iron girder spans over the river, flanked by stone flood arches on the banks. As is normally the case, the middle span was the widest, the flanking spans diminishing in size. All of the original masonry of the bridge survives, including the two piers in the river. However, the old girders were replaced (probably in 1974) by a modern steel structure which provides a wider roadway with pavements on either side cantilevered out over the original width of the bridge.
Junction
A short distance to the south of the bridge, the B979 meets the B9077 at a simple T Junction. The two routes multiplex to the west for just over half a mile, while to the east the B9077 passes under the new AWPR Dee Bridge.
