The Medway Towns are: (the former city of) Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham, which form, along with the smaller settlements like Strood and Rainham, a large conurbation on the River Medway. They are all bypassed by the M2. Elsewhere, signs on roads treat the various towns as a Primary Destination eg: Rochester on the A228, Chatham on the A229, followed by the A230, and Gillingham on the A231.
