The N64 was a link road from the N6 to the N17 northeast of Galway. It was important enough to be upgraded to national primary status, and so became the northern section of the N18, allowing Atlantic Corridor traffic to bypass Galway city centre. After the M18 / M17 route was completed to Tuam in 2017, it was downgraded to the R381.
The N64 was part of the NRA's 'Western Corridor', making it a key priority for upgrades.
