Pentagon Island is a major, partially grade separated junction in Derby where the A52 now meets the revised A61. The main route through the junction, the A52, is only grade separated one way. Traffic on the westbound carriageway, trying to enter the city, must use the roundabout, which is signal controlled.
The Pentagon Island is also Junction 1 of Derby's inner ring road junction numbering system, for reasons which remain unclear.
History
The roundabout was originally not grade separated at all, as the stretch of the A52 from the Inner Ring Road to the Pentagon opened in 1972, but the stretch from the Pentagon to the Borrowash Bypass was not built until later. This meant the original course of the A52, Nottingham Road, remained in use. This could, for obvious reasons, not be grade separated immediately.
Only with the construction of the new A52 dual carriageway between the Pentagon and the Borrowash Bypass did the Pentagon become grade separated at all. Derbyshire County Council's Nottingham Road Diversion Scheme and Department of Transport's Borrowash Bypass Extension scheme were due to open on 29 May 1980.
Oddly, for reasons which are as yet unknown, the Pentagon Island was only ever planned to be grade separated to the current configuration. Grade separation in both directions was never planned.
