The Queen's Gate Tunnel runs below the redeveloped Cardiff Bay area.
History
It was built as part of the Butetown Link, a 1.7 mile dual carriageway from Ferry Road Interchange to Queens Gate junction which was opened to traffic on 26 March 1995. The official opening had been on 25 March 1995 by Neil Kinnock, European Transport Commissioner. It included Butetown Link Bridge. Contractors were DMD of Cardiff and Cogefarimpresit of Milan, cost £135 million.
Trivia
The Doctor Who 2009 special Planet of the Dead had various scenes filmed in and around the tunnel. The Doctor Who spin off series, Torchwood, also features scenes through the tunnel and on the nearby Taff Viaduct.
