The R183 is a regional road running westward from Castleblayney in County Monaghan to the Northern Ireland border and the A34 near Clones.
In the absence of an obvious east-west national road, the R183 is relatively important for traffic travelling from County Louth towards Counties Fermanagh and Sligo, as a continuation of the N53.
Midway between Ballybay and Newbliss, the R183 has a roundabout junction with the R188, relatively unusual on Irish regional roads. It replaced a crossroads which had been the scene of several fatal accidents.
