The R259 follows the coast of The Rosses Peninsula in north-west Donegal from Croithlí (Crolly) to An Clochán Liath (Dungloe) by way of Ailt an Chorráin (Burtonport), thereby constituting a 24-km-long loop off the N56.
The road was part of the T72. When the modern road number system was introduced in 1977, the N56 ran further inland, in what was the L130.
