Roman road RM182 is a short route from the fort and settlement of Derventio at Little Chester, Derby to the river Trent at Trent Lock near Long Eaton.
It might have continued to Vermentum on the Fosse Way (RM5) at Willoughby.
Route
The road leaves Little Chester fort heading east to a point at the north end of Racecourse Park (SK361375). Here it realigns more south-easterly to meet the Nottingham Road at its junction with Cemetery Hill. It is followed by the Nottingham road on a good alignment. It is joined by the A6005 to be Derby Road, Spondon and the Nottingham Road (again) to the Ock Brook in Burrowash.
After crossing the brook the road continues to Draycott where the A6005 forks left and the Roman road an unclassified road to SK449329. Here the modern road veers right while the ancient road went straight on 'through' Church Wilne Reservoir. It then passes under the M1 and it taken up by Draycott Road to the B6540. The road then crosses Trent Lock Golf Centre to reach the river Trent at SK484312.
Trent Lock was no doubt the place where foot traffic entered the river to go downstream to the Humber and may have gone no further. However, it may have continued on to meet Fosse Way at Willoughby-on-the-Wolds. Its most likely route would be made via a small number of alignments:
- from the Trent, through Ratcliffe power station to Hill Top Farm near Bunny Hill on the A60 (SK5632797);
- from there to the west bank of the Kingston Brook (SK626249;
- and then along Back Lane at Willoughby to the Fosse Way (A46) at Vermentum.
