Pilning Interchange is the name given to Junction 22 of the M4, where it meets the M49. The junction is a roundabout interchange, with the M4 flying above the junction.

History

The junction was constructed as part of the Second Severn Crossing in 1996. As part of the works, it was decided to build a link road between the new crossing and the M5 southbound to take some of the pressure over the existing M4 / M5 junction at Almondsbury Interchange. As such, the M49 was built.

Pilning Interchange was built as a roundabout interchange. Although at first glance this seems redundant as most of the traffic is moving between the M49 and the Severn Crossing, it's particularly useful for when the bridge closes, allowing traffic from the M49 to be diverted to the M4 eastbound to find an alternative route.
