Renumbering:A1 and A6 proposal 16 March 1933
This is an interesting document detailing a proposal to extend the A1 to John O Groats (via the A9) and the A6 to Inverness (via the A74 and A82), amongst a whole host of other changes across Scotland. As you should be aware, even where the annotations say Agreed neither the main scheme, not many of the proposals were ever carried out!
Suggested re-numbering of Classified Roads.
Class I Roads
(1) Route A1 instead of terminating at Edinburgh to be extended Northwards to John O Groats following the line of routes A9, A88 (part of) and A882 (part of). No. But alterative suggested.
(2) Route A6 instead of terminating at Carlisle to be extended Northwards to Inverness following the line of routes A74 and A82 (the latter as amended below). No.

From a junction with A8 at Stockwell Street, Glasgow via existing A82 to junction with A805 thence via A805, A81 and A876 to junction with existing A82 at Dunglass Castle thence via existing A82 to junction with A811, thence via A811 to junction with A812, thence via A812 to junction with existing A82, thence via exitsing A82 to junction with A829, thence via A829 to junction with existing A82, thence via existing A82. (3) Route A8 instead of terminating at Gourock to be extended Southwards to Monkton following the line of route A78. Not Agreed
(4) Route A72 instead of terminating at Galashiels to be extended South-eastwards to Newtown St. Boswells following the line of route A6091. Agreed
(5) Section of A702 from junction with existing A74 at Abington to junction with A720 and A720 from junction with A702 to junction with A72 to be included as part of route A73. Agreed.
(6) Route A80 instead of terminating at Stirling to be extended North-eastwards to St Andrews following the line of Route A91. Agreed
(7) Route A85 instead of terminating at Oban to be extended Southwards to Lochgilphead following the line of route A816. No.
(8) Route A90 instead of terminating at Perth to be extended northwards to Inverness following the line of routes A920, A94 and A96. No, but alternative suggested.
(9) Route A92 instead of terminating at Fraserburgh to be extended Westwards to Fochabers following the line of route A98. Involved with No. 8 above.
(10) Route A95 instead of terminating at Kinveachy to be extended South-westwards to Spean Bridge following the line of route A86. Agreed.
(11) Route A199 instead of terminating at junction with A1 to be extended Southwards to near Dalkeith following the line of route A6106. Agreed in principle.
(12) Existing A701 to terminate at Leadburn and thence continue Southwards via A6094 and A752 to existing A74 at Craigielands. Agreed
(13) Existing A702 to terminate at junction with A769 near Dalry and thence continue South-westwards to Newton Stewart via A769 and A712. Agreed

(24) Existing A807 to terminate at junction with A879 and thence continue Westwards to Duntocher following the line of routes B8049, A808 and A810. Agreed.
