Sandwich is a town and historic port on the east coast of Kent. The primary A256 passes through the town from Dover to Ramsgate. The A257 is a non-primary route to Canterbury via Wingham; HGVs are directed to use the A256 towards Dover and the A2 instead. The A258 is a local road towards Dover via Deal.
History
At one point, Sandwich was a traffic bottleneck, as it was the only place in the local area to cross the River Stour. The A256 ran over the single-lane bridge and along narrow streets to the south.
The town was bypassed to the west in 1981. Since then the former A256 to the north has been built up with Discovery Park, including the UK centre for Pfizer. To the south, the former A256 Dover Road is now a dead end.
