Three Maids Hill is the first full-access GSJ on the A34. It is positioned north of Winchester, where the road's alignment changes.

Historically it was a fork where the road to the Midlands (the A34) branched off from the Roman Road towards Andover (the A342). There was a crossroads immediately to the south, serving minor roads.

When the A34 was diverted away from Winchester to meet the A33 Winchester Bypass in 1969, the crossroads became a roundabout, and the A34 was diverted onto its new alignment to the east. A standard Trumpet Interchange linked the new A34 to the roundabout. The A342 towards Andover had since been downgraded to B3420, and that designation was also applied to the old A34 into Winchester.

In around 1985, the A34 to the north was upgraded to dual carriageway. A second roundabout was placed in the middle of the trumpet to provide access to a local access road, which is in fact the original alignment of the A34.

In 1995 the A272 was taken out of Winchester City Centre. Through traffic was expected to go via M3 J9 instead. The B3420 towards Andover was upgraded to A272 to complete this new route.
