Trafalgar Square is a famous square in the heart of London. Named in commemoration of the Battle of Trafalgar, it was fully open in 1845 and it is the home of Nelson's Column and is the closest junction to the recognised centre of London near Charing Cross. The square is a centre of London life and everything from protests to the New Year's Party to the site of London's Christmas tree (a gift from Norway) to celebrations of great sporting victories.
A part of the A4, it is very busy full of traffic though the bulk of that is buses and taxis. Formerly all four sides of the square were used for traffic but the former B405 along the northern side was converted for pedestrians in the early 2000s. The junctions on every corner are controlled by traffic lights.
