Wakefield is a City in the former Metropolitan County of West Yorkshire and historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Its non-trunk road network is maintained by the City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council. The Primary destination of Pontefract is also in Wakefield.

Highways Management
The Council is responsible for the maintenance of 1360 km of roads and associated footways in the district that are not managed by the Highways Agency, 558 km of these roads are covered under winter maintenance. This also includes, 234 bridges and structures, signal controlled junctions, controlled crossings, road markings, 2,500 illuminated signs, 1,200 illuminated bollards, traffic signs and 41,000 street lights.
