Wigtown Road Junction is the only roundabout junction on the A75 between Castle Douglas and Stranraer, which makes it quite a prominent junction. It sits on the Newton Stewart bypass at the junction with the A714 to the south of the town. The A714 continues south to Wigtown, Whithorn and the other villages on the Machars Peninsula, making the junction much busier with turning traffic than many of the other junctions along the A75, which is presumably why a roundabout was selected. For all that, however, it is a fairly ordinary four arm junction with single approach and departure lanes on each arm. The houses of Newton Stewart start just a few metres north along Wigtown Road, meaning that the bypass engineers were very constrained in route options at this point, with the Cree Estuary close at hand to the east. The western arm of the A75 then departs at a 45 degree angle, when all the other routes meet more or less at right angles, in order to regain its original line as quickly as possible.
