Winterstoke Roundabout

The Winterstoke Roundabout on the A370 lies to the east of Weston-super-Mare's town centre, on the main dual-carriageway out to the M5. It sits in the middle of the towns main retail park area, and so can become very congested in peak summer, when tourists, commuters and shoppers all converge here. The traffic lights make things a little easier, but the junction still seems to be hideously over capacity at times.

The A370 to the west is dualled, and for many years this was on two separate roads around a section of the retail park. However, the southern (westbound) road was future-proofed for dualling, so as to turn the northern road into a local access route to the retail park, and this work was finally completed in 2014. To the east of the roundabout, an additional set of traffic lights have been installed to try and improve access to Asda. Whether they work or not is a matter of opinion. Most people think that they shift the westbound queue further back, albeit easing congestion on the roundabout, while eastbound traffic can now stack back almost to the roundabout from the lights.

The road to the south connects, via Oldmixon, to the A370 Hospital Roundabout, providing a sort of town centre bypass. It is signed for motorway traffic, so bypassing the busy town centre, but also carries a lot of local traffic.

When this roundabout was first built, it was an unclassified road, allowing Winterstoke Road to connect with the new retail park roads and the single carriageway Herluin Way. However in the 30 or so years since the roundabout opened, it has been steadily changed without ever increasing the size of the junction, so that first Herluin Way was dualled, then the [{A370]] was re-routed through the junction, and finally the most recent changes to see the dualled Marchfields Way.
