The A6144(M): The Single Carriageway M'way

Location:

The A6144(M) used to be accessed from jcn 6 of the M63, but since the advent of the M60, I am not sure what jcn number it is now. It is near Manchester, and leads to the A6144 near a chemical works at Carrington.

Importance (Past and Present):

It would appear to be a spur from the motorway to take traffic to and from the chemical works. I found out about it from my dad who had to visit it a few times through his work.

Interesting Points:

It is a Single Carriageway Motorway! Amazing. Only about a mile long before it hits the original A6144 and then ends.

Most interesting thing:

See above. It's an amazing bit of trivia to bring up and astound your friends with.

Personally...

I was told about this by my dad and, as I was delivering a car somewhere off the M63, when I saw the sign I just had to experience the UK's only single carriageway motorway. It's very strange, I can't remember if there was any speed limit other than the blanket 70mph, but I do remember a soft curve before the roundabout that signals the end of the fun. I simply drove right round the roundabout and back on to the M63. It's not mentioned in LR75, so it has appeared in the last 20 years or so. I suspect that it was created purely and simply as an access point for the chemical works traffic, as the A6144 is not a staggeringly important route. I would appreciate any extra information anyone has on this curious bit of road, as it deserves a more in depth study. Anyone?
